CV Guide

An employer will see your CV before selecting whether or not to interview you.

Therefore it is important to get yourself noticed with an outstanding CV and possibly also a cover letter.

You need to highlight your achievements and reflect positively on all of your professional experience.

Our useful tips have been designed to help you construct a CV that is not only exemplary, but also exhibits your strengths.

Your recruitment consultant can also offer advice on how to set out your CV to provide a long lasting impression.

Here are some general tips:

CV Do’s

·         Make sure that your CV is adapted to meet the criteria of the role.  After looking at the job specification, identify which points you have experience in and make sure you have mentioned them in your CV.  This will enable a potential employer to easily determine whether or not you will be suitable for the role.

·         Be positive throughout your CV.  Convey your achievements, strengths, personality, and aspirations for success.

·         Also communicate any relevant skills, which may put you at an advantage.  These could include foreign languages, and training courses etc.

·         Place greater emphasis on your most recent positions and summarize roles more than three years old.

·         Include dates, length of employment, and reasons for leaving

·         Ensure that there are no gaps in dates between employments.  If you have previously taken a career break, for whatever reason, mention this.

·         Do not lie on your CV.  There are many ways in which you can be caught out- and if an interviewer notices any discrepancies, this will place you at a disadvantage.

·         Finally, check for spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and presentation errors.  Then ask a friend or colleague to check through your CV again, to ensure you have not missed anything.

CV Don’ts

·         Send out a poor quality CV.  This will deter an employer from wanting to interview you.

·         If you do not take the time to create a professional document, an employer will feel that you are lazy, and unable to fulfil the requirements of the job.

·         Lie on you CV.  Honesty is always the best policy.  Your success will be hindered if you are caught out during the interview process.

·         Enclose any details about your current salary or salary expectations.  These details are negotiable at a later stage.
